Vintage original 8 x 10 in. (20.3 x 25.4 cm.) U.S. single-weight gelatin silver glossy still photograph (NN: P195), very fine condition.
The image depicts a close on-set publicity shot of the film's star, the beautiful Corinne Griffith, looking thoughtful as the film's director, Frank Lloyd, watches her intently. They are on the set of a theatre or opera house box inside auditorium. The caption near the lower left corner of the image reads "FRANK LLOYD" and the caption near the lower right corner reads "CORINNE GRIFFITH."The caption in the bottom outer white border reads "Distributed by First National Pictures." This vintage original on-set publicity still photograph is in very fine condition with a tiny diagonal crease on the bottom right corner and a light 0.75 in. horizontal scratch in the background to the left of Lloyd's upper arm. A 2 in. long x 1 in. wide piece of what appears to be white paper is affixed to the verso on the right side of the still just below the center. There is no damage to this area, so it is not a repair, nor does it appear to be the remnants of an original paper snipe.
Black Oxen was released in December 1923 starring Corinne Griffith, Conway Tearle and Clara Bow. It has been described as "subtle science fiction" and takes its title from William Butler Yeats: "The years like great Black Oxen tread the world." It was produced by Frank Lloyd Productions and distributed by First National Pictures. A special-edition of Atherton's novel was released featuring stills from the film. The George Eastman House retains a complete print of the film. However, only an incomplete version of the film is available through a DVD distributor. The New York Public Library allegedly has a 16mm print available. It is one of about ten films starring Corinne Griffith, out of 58, that are currently available for viewing.
