Vintage original 8 x 10 in. (20.3 x 25.4 cm.) U.S. single-weight gelatin silver glossy still photograph, near-fine condition.
Considered one of the great masterworks of German silent cinema, Die Nibelungen: Siegfried was produced in Germany in 1924 and directed by the renowned Fritz Lang. This vintage original still photograph was printed for the film's original U.S. release from the original German glass negative. The image features a spectacular interior shot of Siegfried (Paul Richter, center) standing defiantly before Brunhild (Hanna Ralph), Queen of Iceland, who is wearing a large Norse-themed helmet, inside her mountaintop castle. King Gunther's warrior, Hagen Tronje (Hans Adalbert Schlettow), with his imposing winged helmet, stands behind Siegfried to his left. The dramatic lighting and composition are exquisite. This vintage original still photograph is in near-fine condition with a 4" diagonal crease and adjoining 1" vertical tear at the bottom right which have been reinforced on the verso with brown paper tape. Please note that the photograph does have a complete outer white border around the entire perimeter of the image (a portion on the left side does not appear in the accompanying website photograph). Rare.
Die Nibelungen is a duology of silent fantasy films created by Austrian director Fritz Lang in 1924--Die Nibelungen: Siegfried and Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge. They were co-written by his then-wife Thea von Harbou, based upon the epic poem "Nibelungenlied," written around AD 1200.
