Vintage original 11 x 14 in. (27.9 x 35.6 cm.) U.S. lobby card, very fine condition.

The silent film comedy Merton of the Movies was released in 1924 by Paramount Pictures and directed by James Cruze. This film is a true "Hollywood" tale and tells the story of a young country man who comes to Hollywood in hopes of becoming a movie actor. The image features a nice close shot of the film's star, Glenn Hunter (as Merton Gill) wearing a simple tan suit and looking somewhat "lost" as Sally Montague, AKA "Flips" (Viola Dana) watches him through a doorway. This vintage original U.S. lobby card is in very fine condition with a small chip on the top left corner and a tiny chip on the top right corner and what appears to be possibly a thin vertical printing error in the blue background above and through the "U" in "Cruze" and then below the "O" in "Merton" and extending downwards to the right of an below the "E" in "Movies" in which the printing has a slight whitish tint to it.

Merton of the Movies is a 1919 book written by Harry Leon Wilson. In 1922, it was adapted into a Broadwayplay by George S. Kaufmanand Marc Connelly. A 1924 silent film version was directed by James Cruzeand starred Glenn Hunterwho had created the role on Broadway. A 1932 sound film version titled Make Me a Star featured Stuart Erwinand a 1947 film version starred Red Skelton. The plot centers around an aspiring movie actor named Merton. Merton is a terrible actor and when the movie executives see how funny that Merton's over-acting is, they cast him in a comedy, but tell him that he's acting in a drama.
