*"Although the Copyright Catalog entry for Buttons lists it as a sound picture, that appears to have been a typographical error. Some reviews called the cabin boy character "Buttons" the first adult role of thirteen-year-old actor Jackie Coogan because he portrayed a teenager, with short hair, rather than a child with the trademark Dutchboy haircut that he previously wore.

Buttons, a street urchin, becomes a page boy on the transatlantic liner S. S. Queenland,  commanded by Captain Travers. Buttons and his friend, Slugger, the ship's recreation leader, get into trouble when they try to show the captain that his fiancée, Ruth, is cheating on him with a bounder named Henri Rizard. Perceiving that they, in addition to Ruth, have abused him, Travers has Buttons and Slugger thrown in the brig. During a shipwreck, Buttons shows his loyalty to Travers when he swims to the bridge and declares his intention to go down with the captain. Real tragedy is avoided when Slugger, on a raft, picks up the two after the ship sinks."
