*"According to information in the Twentieth Century-Fox Records of the Legal Department at the UCLA Theater Arts Library, the title of Harry Carr's original story was "A Royal Scandal." In 1931 Fox remade Paid to Love in a Spanish-language version entitled Hay que casar al príncipe. That film was directed by Lewis Seiler and starring José Mojica and Conchita Montenegro.

American banker Peter Roberts travels to a Balkan kingdom in order to establish more firmly its financial status, and in the process he befriends the crown prince, who, he feels, should be getting married. Roberts attempts to facilitate a match by taking the prince to an apache cafe, and there they find the perfect girl, Gaby. The prince becomes enamored of her, and after some maneuvering, the girl is made a duchess so that she may be in the proper class for marrying a crown prince."
